As the night falls and the world fades to grey,
Memories flood back, like waves in the bay,
A lifetime of choices, so many roads I've crossed,
Now I ponder the wisdom and love I lost.

In this quiet room, shadows dance on the wall,
Time slipping away, but I remember it all,
I see his face, kind and wise,
Tears now filling my fading eyes.

Oh, I wish I'd listened more
To the man I adored,
He was always right.
Could have saved me so much pain
But I was stubborn again and again.

He'd speak softly, with love in his voice,
But I chose the path, I made my own choice,
"Don't tell me what to do," was my refrain,
Now I'm left with echoes of regret and pain.

In the twilight of my years, truth shines bright,
His gentle wisdom, his guiding light,
I pushed away what I needed the most,
Now I'm haunted by the ghost of every lost hope.

Lying here, it's too late to mend,
But I cherish the love he did send,
In his arms, I could have found peace,
Instead, I fought battles that would never cease.

Oh, I wish I'd listened more
To the man I adored,
He was always right.
Could have saved me so much pain
But I was stubborn again and again.

He grew so tired of my stubborn ways,
His frustration grew, his patience swayed,
He stopped offering his wisdom and grace,
Knowing I'd reject it, lost in my own space.

Oh, I wish I'd listened more
To the man I adored,
He was always right.
Could have saved me so much pain
But I was stubborn again and again.

So if you're listening, take my advice,
Heed the ones who love you, be wise,
For in the end, love's the truest guide,
Don't let pride leave you empty inside.

Oh, I wish I'd listened more
To the man I adored,
He was always right.

And now I'm left with only the night...

Richard's Wish I'd Listened More

"Wish I'd Listened More" is a poignant exploration of regret, wisdom, and the consequences of stubborn pride. The song's narrator, reflecting on a lifetime of choices, laments their failure to heed the advice of a loved one, presumably a father figure or mentor. This introspective journey touches on universal themes of human experience, offering listeners a mirror to examine their own relationships and decisions.

The opening verses set a somber tone, painting a picture of twilight years filled with retrospection. The imagery of night falling and the world fading to grey symbolizes the narrator's approaching end, both literally and figuratively. This twilight becomes a canvas for memories to flood back "like waves in the bay," suggesting a tide of emotions and recollections that cannot be held back.

Central to the song's narrative is the relationship between the narrator and "the man I adored." This figure is portrayed as a source of wisdom, kindness, and love - attributes that the narrator failed to fully appreciate in their younger years. The repeated refrain, "Oh, I wish I'd listened more," serves as a haunting reminder of missed opportunities and the irreversible nature of time.

The song delves into the complex dynamics of parent-child or mentor-mentee relationships. The line "Don't tell me what to do" encapsulates the rebellious spirit of youth, the desire for independence that often blinds us to valuable guidance. This stubbornness, as the narrator realizes too late, led to unnecessary pain and struggles that could have been avoided.

There's a profound sense of loss permeating the lyrics. The wisdom offered was not just practical advice, but a form of love - "His gentle wisdom, his guiding light." The narrator's rejection of this guidance is now seen as a rejection of love itself, leaving them "haunted by the ghost of every lost hope." This metaphor powerfully illustrates how our choices can have far-reaching emotional consequences.

The song also touches on the gradual erosion of patience in the face of repeated rejection. The mentor figure eventually "stopped offering his wisdom and grace," highlighting how our actions can push away the very people trying to help us. This serves as a warning about the potential long-term consequences of our behavior in relationships.

Ultimately, "Wish I'd Listened More" is not just a personal lament but a cautionary tale. The final verse shifts to direct advice for the listener: "Heed the ones who love you, be wise." This transformation of personal regret into universal wisdom gives the song a redemptive quality, suggesting that even in our failures, there are lessons to be learned and shared.

The recurring metaphor of night and fading light throughout the song reinforces the sense of time running out. From the opening lines to the final "And now I'm left with only the night," there's a palpable feeling of opportunities lost and the encroaching finality of death or isolation.

In essence, "Wish I'd Listened More" is a deeply human story about the struggle between independence and guidance, pride and humility, youth and wisdom. It reminds us of the value of open-hearted listening and the importance of recognizing love in its many forms before it's too late.
