The thoughts that rain their steady glow
Like stars on life’s cold sea,
Which others know, or say they know,—
They never shone for me.
Thoughts light, like gleams, my spirit’s sky,
But they will not remain.
They light me once, they hurry by,
And never come again.

In the meantime, I invite you to explore the poem's themes, structure, and meaning. You can also check out the gallery for other musical arrangements or learn more about Matthew Arnold's life and contributions to literature.
Check back soon to experience how "Despondency" transforms when verse meets melody—a unique journey that makes poetry accessible, engaging, and profoundly moving in new ways.
