And spreads its earliest charms.
No track behind them as they fly
Truth beckoned from her radiant throne,
How glorious rose life’s morning star!
—Alas! th’ unbidden sigh will rise:
And share thy ecstasies!
While pride forbade, the starting tear
Tis sunshine all, and ease.
Life’s onward path grew dark and drear,
While Hope and Love looked smiling down,
—Oh, could I mount with thee on high
And, narrowing with each coming year,
’Twas thus, with youthful ardour fired,
While warm with hope and rapturous joy
In bright procession round her car
And still that twilight soft and dear,
Sing on! sing on! What heart so cold,
One ray not yet withdrawn;
To snatch from fate the dazzling prize
When such a tale of joy is told,
Those days shall dawn no more.
Proclaims departed peace.
Thy little bosom knows no ill,
Thy thrilling lay rings cheerily,
How danced the heavenly train!
Beyond the beam of vulgar eyes.
Half makes me fain to linger here,
Love swells its notes, and liberty,
Thy tranquil days glide smoothly by;
The wide world opens to thy view,
Like thy own plumes along the sky,
Thy sense is keen, thy joys are new;
Mount, child of morning, mount and sing,
Catch the glad impulse of thy strain,
Twas thus my earliest hopes aspired,
Too gay, too bright, too pure to last,
One lingering, doubtful beam is shed,
Still o’er my soul, though changed and dead,
And fling their veil aside;
Far showered around, the hill, the plain,
As from some cherub of the sky
But needs must sympathize?
I hail thy morning melody.
It melted from my gaze.
I vainly thought to soar;
Nor bade my toils be vain.
Bathed in the fountains of the dew,
Too soon the fond illusion passed;—
And youth’s exulting pride.
Half hope a second dawn.
And sound thy shrill alarms;
And Fame held high her starry crown,
No gloomy thought, no wayward will:
That tells of friends and former cheer,
Would fall o’er happier days.
And gaily beat thy fluttering wing,

A note from Richard

V2Melody will close at midnight on 20 January 2028

This site has been a retirement project in musical poetry: poems chosen with care and set to music, offered freely for as long as it felt right to keep the garden open.

The work no longer holds the place it once did in my life. I have gone as far with it as I wish to go. Like a sand mandala, it was made to be completed and then released. I am not attached to its permanence, and I do not believe any of it needs to last beyond the time it was given. The poems were already here before I arrived and began to experiment with them. They will still be here when these musical experiments, and indeed myself, have been swept away, like the sand of a mandala. Nothing has been lost.

I want a simpler end to my life, days of simple love and enjoyment with my wonderful wife of 20 years. The work of maintaining a server, the monitoring, and the residual obligations that come with keeping a site alive no longer fit that life.

From 4 November 2026 I will not be adding new poems or musical poems to the site.

Until midnight on 20 January 2028, Spanish time, everything remains available exactly as it is. That is when my VPS server contract comes to an end, and it will not be renewed. After that, the server will be switched off and the site will disappear.

The Mandala Is Finished explains this more fully.

Thank you to anyone who found a poem, a track, or a quiet moment here.

The pleasure was in the making.
