Стрекоза и Муравей

Попрыгунья Стрекоза
Лето красное пропела;
Оглянуться не успела,
Как зима катит в глаза.
Помертвело чисто поле;
Нет уж дней тех светлых боле,
Как под каждым ей листком
Был готов и стол, и дом.

Всё прошло: с зимой холодной
Нужда, голод настает;
Стрекоза уж не поет:
И кому же в ум пойдет
На желудок петь голодный!
Злой тоской удручена,
К муравью ползет она:
«Не оставь меня, кум милый!
Дай ты мне собраться с силой
И до вешних только дней
Прокорми и обогрей!»

«Кумушка, мне странно это:
Да работала ль ты в лето?»
Говорит ей Муравей.

«До того ль, голубчик, было
В мягких муравах у нас —
Песни, резвость всякий час,
Так, что голову вскружило».

«А, так ты…» — «Я без души
Лето целое все пела».

«Ты все пела? это дело:
Так поди же, попляши!»

The Dragonfly and the Ant

A Dragonfly, carefree and spry,
Sang through the summer and let time fly.
But soon she found, as fall grew cold,
The winter winds were harsh and bold.
The fields were bare, the days grew short,
And hunger left no room for sport.
She had no food, no warm retreat—
Not even crumbs or scraps to eat.

In desperation, filled with dread,
She came to the hardworking Ant and said:
"Please, dear friend, help me out!
Lend me food to last the drought.
Just a little to get by,
Until the warm days of July."

The Ant, however, shook her head,
And asked, "What did you do instead?
Did you work at all in summer's heat?"

"Work? Why, no! I sang—how sweet!
Day and night, without a care,
I sang all summer in the air."

"You sang all summer?" the Ant said,
"How grand! Well, now go dance for bread!"
