And shuts a distant door. 
A woman as I was born! 
The airs he knew 
As I sit, why such 
I play my sweet old airs — 
As if it would stay; 
And another night 
When our love was true — 
And I wonder much 
In this soul-sick blight; 
But he goes his way, 
And passes up the stairs. 
I sing my songs once more, 
His footstep near
