Felt like a king with an army, always there
Under city lights, the bonds seemed so tight
But shadows whispered truths, hidden from my sight

Blindly trusted hearts, tales of loyalty proclaimed
Never saw the cracks, until the light of shame

I thought I had it all, a close circle of friends
We'd laugh until dawn, have each other’s backs, through thick and thin
But when the tide turned rough, and I needed them the most
They vanished in the night, leaving me like a ghost

I believed they had my back, always by my side
Turns out they were just pretending, with secrets to hide
When the going got tough, they scattered in the wind
Left me feeling lost, my trust wearing thin

Won't be fooled by their plastic crowns
Rise above the ashes, with newfound strength I'm found
Real connections waiting to be made
Open my heart, where true loyalty's displayed

Now I see their friendship was never truly real
They kept a running score, my worth they’d try to steal
Always judging my flaws, never lifting me high
Leaving me drained, as they silently passed by

Won't be fooled by their plastic crowns
Rise above the ashes, with newfound strength I'm found
Real connections waiting to be made
Open my heart, where true loyalty's displayed

It hurts to let go, to acknowledge the pain
But I'm better off now, free from their toxic chain
I'll focus on healing, on finding my way
To friendships that uplift, come what may
Yearning for connections, built on trust and care

Won't be fooled by their plastic crowns
Rise above the ashes, with newfound strength I'm found
Real connections waiting to be made
Open my heart, where true loyalty's displayed

So I'll keep my heart open, my eyes wide awake
Seeking out true friends, no longer a mistake
No more false pretences, or half-hearted care
I know what I deserve, and real love will be there

R.I.C.'s Plastic Crowns

"Plastic Crowns" delves deep into the painful realization that some friendships are not as genuine as they once appeared. The songwriter takes us on a journey of disillusionment, growth, and ultimately, hope for more authentic connections.

The opening verses paint a vivid picture of false security. The narrator felt like royalty, surrounded by what seemed to be loyal subjects. The imagery of "city lights" suggests a glamorous facade, while "shadows whispered truths" foreshadows the revelation to come. This contrast between appearance and reality is a central theme throughout the song.

As the story unfolds, we see the narrator's world crumble. The friends who were supposed to be there "through thick and thin" disappear when they're needed most. This betrayal is described in stark terms: "They vanished in the night, leaving me like a ghost." The use of "ghost" is particularly poignant, suggesting not just abandonment but a loss of identity and substance.

The chorus introduces the titular "plastic crowns," a powerful metaphor for fake friendships and false loyalty. These crowns, like the relationships they represent, are cheap imitations of something valuable. They may look impressive from afar, but they lack substance and durability.

R.I.C. doesn't stop at describing the pain of betrayal. The song takes a turn towards resilience and growth. The repeated refrain "Won't be fooled by their plastic crowns" shows a determination to learn from this experience. The narrator promises to "Rise above the ashes," suggesting a phoenix-like rebirth from the ruins of these failed friendships.

The song delves into the toxic nature of these relationships. Lines like "They kept a running score, my worth they'd try to steal" reveal the manipulative and draining aspects of these false friendships. It's a stark reminder that some people view relationships as transactional rather than nurturing.

However, "Plastic Crowns" is not a song of despair. It's a anthem of hope and personal growth. The narrator acknowledges the pain of letting go but recognizes that freedom from these "toxic chains" is ultimately beneficial. There's a sense of optimism as the song looks forward to "Real connections waiting to be made."

The final verses show a commitment to remaining open-hearted despite past hurts. The narrator is "Yearning for connections, built on trust and care," demonstrating a refusal to become cynical or closed off. This resilience is inspiring, offering a message of hope to anyone who has experienced similar betrayals.

"Plastic Crowns" resonates on a universal level. Many people have experienced the pain of realizing that someone they trusted was not who they appeared to be. The song validates these feelings of hurt and betrayal while also providing a roadmap for moving forward.

In essence, "Plastic Crowns" is a song about the journey from naivety to wisdom, from blind trust to discerning openness. It acknowledges the pain of disillusionment but doesn't wallow in it. Instead, it offers a message of resilience, self-respect, and hope for more authentic connections in the future.

The recurring imagery of crowns, ashes, and rising above creates a powerful narrative arc. We see the fall from a false sense of belonging and security, followed by a period of pain and reflection, and finally, a resolution to seek out more genuine relationships.

Ultimately, "Plastic Crowns" is a testament to the human spirit's capacity for growth and renewal. It reminds us that while we can't control others' actions, we can choose how we respond to betrayal and disappointment. The song encourages listeners to value themselves, to seek out authentic connections, and to remain open to love and friendship despite past hurts.
