Now the stone house on the lake front is finished and the workmen are beginning the fence
The palings are made of iron bars with steel points that can stab the life out of any man who falls on them
As a fence, it is a masterpiece, and will shut off the rabble and all vagabonds and hungry men and all wandering children looking for a place to play
Passing through the bars and over the steel points will go nothing except Death and the Rain and Tomorrow
I am busy working to bring Carl Sandburg's "A Fence" to life through some unique musical arrangements and will have a full analysis of the poem here for you later.
In the meantime, I invite you to explore the poem's themes, structure, and meaning. You can also check out the gallery for other musical arrangements or learn more about Carl Sandburg's life and contributions to literature.
Check back soon to experience how "A Fence" transforms when verse meets melody—a unique journey that makes poetry accessible, engaging, and profoundly moving in new ways.
