We each inhabit a universe that no one else can fully enter. Poetry reminds us that although those universes never become one, they can overlap in moments of extraordinary understanding.
After a serious illness, I found myself understanding D. H. Lawrence's poem Blank in a way I never had before. Sometimes recovery is not dramatic. Sometimes it begins with a small nudge from within.
Poetry does not explain the universe. But every now and then, it makes me suspect that words are woven more deeply into its fabric than we usually imagine.
Perhaps the mistake is believing that the life we want exists somewhere in the future. Sometimes contentment arrives when we finally recognise what is already here.
