Closes

A note from Richard

V2Melody will close at midnight on 20 January 2028

This site has been a retirement project in musical poetry: poems chosen with care and set to music, offered freely for as long as it felt right to keep the garden open.

The work no longer holds the place it once did in my life. I have gone as far with it as I wish to go. Like a sand mandala, it was made to be completed and then released. I am not attached to its permanence, and I do not believe any of it needs to last beyond the time it was given. The poems were already here before I arrived and began to experiment with them. They will still be here when these musical experiments, and indeed myself, have been swept away, like the sand of a mandala. Nothing has been lost.

I want a simpler end to my life, days of simple love and enjoyment with my wonderful wife of 20 years. The work of maintaining a server, the monitoring, and the residual obligations that come with keeping a site alive no longer fit that life.

From 4 November 2026 I will not be adding new poems or musical poems to the site.

Until midnight on 20 January 2028, Spanish time, everything remains available exactly as it is. That is when my VPS server contract comes to an end, and it will not be renewed. After that, the server will be switched off and the site will disappear.

The Mandala Is Finished explains this more fully.

Thank you to anyone who found a poem, a track, or a quiet moment here.

The pleasure was in the making.

Richard

The Money-Seeker

by Helen Hunt Jackson

What has he in this glorious world's domain?
Unreckoned loss which he counts up for gain,
Unreckoned shame, of which he feels no stain,
Unreckoned dead he does not know were slain.

What things does he take with him when he dies?
Nothing of all that he on earth did prize:
Unto his grovelling feet and sordid eyes
How difficult and empty seem the skies!

Do not forget me!

by Violet Fane

Do not forget me! when the day is ending,
And dark'ning shadows gather o'er the sea;
Sometimes alone, and near this casement bending,
Pause in the twilight and remember me!

Think on the brightness of the summer weather,
Years, years ago, one well-remember'd day,
When to the woods we wander'd forth together,
Amongst the primroses and blue bells gay.

Time changes all! those blossoms now are faded,
Or, if they bloom, they do not seem as fair
As once before, when, by the beech-trees shaded,
You twined them tenderly amongst my hair.

I dash away the tear, that all unbidden
Arises, when I think that this is past,
And muse on all my anxious heart has hidden
Since the sad ev'ning when I saw you last!

Earth has enough of heav'n to gild its sorrow
And turn the current of its griefs away,
Could we but learn to dread no dark To-morrow,
And live for ever in one glad To-day!

Whilst I have mused in solitude and sadness
On all the changes fleeting time can bring,
Others have hallow'd to you, with their gladness,
The happy hours of many another Spring.

All this I know, yet when the shadows darken,
And when none other better loved is by
To mark your silent mood, perchance, or hearken
To the soft echo of a half-heaved sigh;

Then lend to me that hour of soft emotion,
And link'd in spirit let us leave the shore,
And floating o'er the dark mysterious ocean,
Be unto one another as before!

Do not forget me! when the day is ending,
And dark'ning shadows linger o'er the sea,
Sometimes alone, and near this casement bending,
Pause in the twilight and remember me!
