A Word

by Harold Monro

Have you ever loved a word
Better than the man who spoke it?
So the moment that you heard
Its delightful syllables
Fall upon the air
You went wandering idly home
Dreaming of the way it cooled
That uncomfortable room?
Trying to repeat it slowly
Standing back from it and watching
Like a lover
To discover
What it meant and why you loved it?
Mostly words like hailstones tumble
On the thin air and disperse
In indiscriminating jumble
Incoherent or perverse.

Why did you speak this evening
Suddenly like that
Just as I was going?

O Welcome Bonny Month of May

by Amelia Alderson Opie

O welcome bonny Month of may
I love thy charms to view!
Now birds I hear on ev'ry spray,
And I hear Donald too,
Thou art the month that brings
The Swain who comes my hand to woo—
I see thy verdure deck the plain,
And I see Donald too.

Yet bonny, bonny month of May,
My heart's so fond, and true,
If Donald's absent, well-a-day!
No charms in thee I view.
But if he's here, when winter's snows
The frozen earth bestrew,
I smile to hear each wind that blows,
For I hear Donald too.
