Each poem scrolls on its own, so the two texts stay beside each other.

He fumbles at your spirit

by Emily Dickinson

He fumbles at your spirit
As players at the keys—
Before they drop full music on—
He stuns you by degrees—

Prepares your brittle nature
For the ethereal blow
By fainter hammers—further heard—
Then nearer—then so—slow—

Your breath has time to straighten—
Your brain—to bubble cool—
Deals one—imperial thunderbolt—
That scalps your naked soul—

When Winds hold forests in their Paws—
The Universe—is still

The Shepherd

by Joseph Campbell

Dark against the stars
He stands: the cloudy bars
Of nebulae, the constellations ring
His forehead like a king.

The ewes are in the fold:
His consciousness is old
As his, who in Chaldaea long ago
Penned his flock, and brooded so.
