A quiet notice V2Melody closes at midnight on , Spanish time.

A note from Richard

V2Melody will close at midnight on 31 December 2026

This site has been a retirement project in musical poetry: poems chosen with care and set to music, offered freely for as long as it felt right to keep the garden open.

After the death of my mother, the work no longer holds the place it once did in my life. I have gone as far with it as I wish to go. Like a sand mandala, it was made to be completed and then released. I am not attached to its permanence, and I do not believe any of it needs to last beyond the time it was given.

My wife and I are simplifying our days. The server, the monitoring, and the residual obligations that come with keeping a site alive no longer fit the quieter life we want.

Until midnight on 31 December 2026, Spanish time, everything remains available exactly as it is. After that, the server will be switched off and the site will disappear.

Thank you to anyone who found a poem, a track, or a quiet moment here.

The pleasure was in the making.

Richard

This number is read from the build of the lines. The bright edge is that number, carried outward until the pattern repeats.

Arrow Song

by Nora Hopper Chesson

The land is alight with the sword and the arrow,
The light, long arrow, the fire of the bow —
The need-fires blaze upon hill and barrow
And fire and fuming as sisters go.
From open sea to the fjord that's narrow,
The longships dart through the rain of stones —
A bowman loosens his shining arrow,
It leaps to its mark — and a woman moans.

As fire through the forest sweeps the Viking,
As fire's the flight of his long, light dart:
As molten fire is the sunlight, striking
On the golden harness that shields his heart.
With fire and flaming from breast to barrow,
From dusk to darkness the Vikings go:
As Thor's own bolt is the flying arrow,
The light, long arrow, the fire of the bow.

Christian Settlements in Africa

by Lydia Huntley Sigourney

Winds! what have ye gather'd from Afric's strand,
As ye swept the breadth of that fragrant land?
The breath of the spice-bud, the rich perfume
Of balm and of gum and of flowret's bloom?
"We have gather'd nought, save a pagan prayer,
And the stifling sigh of the heart's despair."

Waves! what have ye heard on that ancient coast
Where Egypt the might of her fame did boast,
Where the statue of Memnon saluted the morn,
And the pyramids tower in their giant scorn?
"We have heard the curse of the slave-ship's crew,
And the shriek of the chain'd as the shores withdrew."

Stars! what have ye seen with the glancing eye
From your burning thrones in the sapphire-sky?
"We have mark'd young hope as it brightly glow'd,
On Afric's breast whence the blood-drop flow'd,
And we chanted the hymn which we sang at first,
When the sun from the midnight of Chaos burst."
