Closes

A note from Richard

V2Melody will close at midnight on 20 January 2028

This site has been a retirement project in musical poetry: poems chosen with care and set to music, offered freely for as long as it felt right to keep the garden open.

The work no longer holds the place it once did in my life. I have gone as far with it as I wish to go. Like a sand mandala, it was made to be completed and then released. I am not attached to its permanence, and I do not believe any of it needs to last beyond the time it was given.

I want a simpler life, without the hassle of being online. The work of maintaining a server, the monitoring, and the residual obligations that come with keeping a site alive no longer fit the life I want.

From 4 November 2026 I will not be adding new poems or musical poems to the site.

Until midnight on 20 January 2028, Spanish time, everything remains available exactly as it is. That is when my VPS server contract comes to an end, and it will not be renewed. After that, the server will be switched off and the site will disappear.

Thank you to anyone who found a poem, a track, or a quiet moment here.

The pleasure was in the making.

Richard

On the Faithlessness and Venality of his Times

by James Graham

Unhappy is the man
In whose breast is confined
The sorrows and distresses all
Of an afflicted mind.

Th'extremity is great,
He dies if he conceal,
The world's so void of secret friends
Betrayed if he reveal.

Then break afflicted heart!
And live not in these days,
When all prove merchants of their faith,
None trust what other says.

For when the sun doth shine,
Then shadows do appear;
But when the sun doth hide his face,
They with the sun retire.

Some friends as shadows are,
And fortune as the sun;
They never proffer any help
Till fortune first begin.

But if in any case
Fortune shall first decay,
Then they, as shadows of the sun,
With fortune run away.

There's a certain Slant of light

by Emily Dickinson

There's a certain Slant of light,
Winter Afternoons –
That oppresses, like the Heft
Of Cathedral Tunes –

Heavenly Hurt, it gives us –
We can find no scar,
But internal difference –
Where the Meanings, are –

None may teach it – Any –
'Tis the seal Despair –
An imperial affliction
Sent us of the Air –

When it comes, the Landscape listens –
Shadows – hold their breath –
When it goes, 'tis like the Distance
On the look of Death –
