Love is not all

by Edna St. Vincent Millay

Love is not all; it is not meat nor drink
Nor slumber nor a roof against the rain,
Nor yet a floating spar to men that sink
And rise and sink and rise and sink again;
Love can not fill the thickened lung with breath,
Nor clean the blood, nor set the fractured bone;
Yet many a man is making friends with death
Even as I speak, for lack of love alone.
It well may be that in a difficult hour,
Pinned down by pain and moaning for release,
Or nagged by want past resolution’s power,
I might be driven to sell your love for peace,
Or trade the memory of this night for food.
It well may be. I do not think I would.

It's age, not youth, alone can truly love

by William Ellery Leonard

It's age, not youth, alone can truly love:
Only when thought has mastered sex and found
It one with treetops, hills, and stars above,
One with all roots, springs, minerals underground,
Only when grief again, again, has laid
Hot hands upon cold bodies of our dead,
Can man approach love truly unafraid,
And know the warmth and whispers of love's bed;
And only a man who's clambered many a peak,
And heard the lava boil, the vapor hiss,
Or walked burnt cities in the flame and reek,
Can pour a life-time in a single kiss.
Against all poets I would stake this truth,
Except your love for me is born — of youth.
