Closes

A note from Richard

V2Melody will close at midnight on 20 January 2028

This site has been a retirement project in musical poetry: poems chosen with care and set to music, offered freely for as long as it felt right to keep the garden open.

The work no longer holds the place it once did in my life. I have gone as far with it as I wish to go. Like a sand mandala, it was made to be completed and then released. I am not attached to its permanence, and I do not believe any of it needs to last beyond the time it was given. The poems were already here before I arrived and began to experiment with them. They will still be here when these musical experiments, and indeed myself, have been swept away, like the sand of a mandala. Nothing has been lost.

I want a simpler end to my life, days of simple love and enjoyment with my wonderful wife of 20 years. The work of maintaining a server, the monitoring, and the residual obligations that come with keeping a site alive no longer fit that life.

From 4 November 2026 I will not be adding new poems or musical poems to the site.

Until midnight on 20 January 2028, Spanish time, everything remains available exactly as it is. That is when my VPS server contract comes to an end, and it will not be renewed. After that, the server will be switched off and the site will disappear.

The Mandala Is Finished explains this more fully.

Thank you to anyone who found a poem, a track, or a quiet moment here.

The pleasure was in the making.

Richard

Cheese monger not Warmonger

by Nelson Brooks

Come hear the tale of the Saint of Streatley,
While I tell the story of Patrick Rance,
A Military man with a heart of cheese
A Major who then took a major stance
To save for a nation, a farmhouse taste
In Jessamine Cottage; the family grew
Preserving the past; no time to waste.

This monocled master of all things mould
A hero of the dairies in England,
This entrepreneur who sent out blank cheques,
While fighting each rule the MMB planned,
Standing tall for the Dorset Blue Vinney,
He wrote of the champion cheese obtained,
Back in the cheese shop in flowing Pinny,
He would sample with glee each blue-flecked vein.

He is gone now; But only in body,
His spirit lives on, more strongly each day,
Like Cornish Brie; what he started will change,
New zealous mongers will each have their say,
Celebrity foodies, all doff their cap,
To this hero they will all give a glance,
Maturing with age, his legend survives,
The implacable Major Patrick Rance.

Let me Lean Hard

by Ella Wheeler Wilcox

Let me lean hard upon the Eternal Breast:
In all earth's devious ways I sought for rest
And found it not. I will be strong, said I,
And lean upon myself. I will not cry
And importune all heaven with my complaint.
But now my strength fails, and I fall, I faint:
Let me lean hard.

Let me lean hard upon the unfailing Arm.
I said I will walk on, I fear no harm,
The spark divine within my soul will show
The upward pathway where my feet should go.
But now the heights to which I most aspire
Are lost in clouds. I stumble and I tire:
Let me lean hard.

Let me lean harder yet. That swerveless force
Which speeds the solar systems on their course
Can take, unfelt, the burden of my woe,
Which bears me to the dust and hurts me so.
I thought my strength enough for any fate,
But lo! I sink beneath my sorrow's weight:
Let me lean hard.
