After Love

by Arthur Symons

O to part now, and, parting now,
     Never to meet again;
To have done for ever, I and thou,
     With joy, and so with pain.

It is too hard, too hard to meet
     As friends, and love no more;
Those other meetings were too sweet
     That went before.

And I would have, now love is over,
     An end to all, an end:
I cannot, having been your lover,
     Stoop to become your friend!

Ode II.11

by Quintus Horatius Flaccus

Quid bellicosus Cantaber et Scythes,
Hirpine Quinti, cogitet Hadria
divisus obiecto, remittas
quaerere, nec trepides in usum

poscentis aevi pauca: fugit retro
levis iuventas et decor, arida
pellente lascivos amores
canitie facilemque somnum.

Non semper idem floribus est honor
vernis neque uno luna rubens nitet
vultu; quid aeternis minorem
consiliis animum fatigas?

Cur non sub alta vel platano vel hac
pinu iacentes sic temere et rosa
canos odorati capillos,
dum licet, Assyriaque nardo

potamus uncti? Dissipat Euius
curas edacis. Quis puer ocius
restinguet ardentis Falerni
pocula praetereunte lympha?

Quis devium scortum eliciet domo
Lyden? Eburna, dic age, cum lyra
maturet incomptam Lacaenae
more comam religata nodum.
