The Dreame

by Ben Jonson

Or scorne, or pittie on me take,
I must the true Relation make,
I am undone to Night;
Love in a subtile Dreame disguis'd,
Hath both my heart and me surpriz'd,
Whom never yet he durst t'attempt awake;
Nor will he tell me for whose sake
He did me the Delight,
Or Spight,
But leaves me to inquire,
In all my wild desire
Of sleepe againe; who was his Aid?
And sleepe so guiltie and afraid,
As since he dares not come within my sight.

In My Cot, Tho' Small's My Store

by Amelia Alderson Opie

In my Cot, tho' small's my store,
I on pleasure's lap recline,
What cou'd fortune give me more?
Laura, beauteous Laura's mine.
Hence Ambition! hence away!
Thine's an empty pleasure
Trust me that of Life's short day,
Love alone's the treasure.
War! I hate thy blood-stained wreath,
Pow'r! thy sparkling crown I scorn,
While my tranquil Cot beneath,
Mine's the wreath by lovers worn,
Laura's smiles make labour gay,
And enrapture leisure
Proving still of Life's short day,
Love alone's the treasure.
