Closes

A note from Richard

V2Melody will close at midnight on 20 January 2028

This site has been a retirement project in musical poetry: poems chosen with care and set to music, offered freely for as long as it felt right to keep the garden open.

After the death of my mother, the work no longer holds the place it once did in my life. I have gone as far with it as I wish to go. Like a sand mandala, it was made to be completed and then released. I am not attached to its permanence, and I do not believe any of it needs to last beyond the time it was given.

My wife and I are simplifying our days. The server, the monitoring, and the residual obligations that come with keeping a site alive no longer fit the quieter life we want.

From 4 November 2026 I will not be adding new poems or musical poems to the site.

Until midnight on 20 January 2028, Spanish time, everything remains available exactly as it is. That is when my VPS server contract comes to an end, and it will not be renewed. After that, the server will be switched off and the site will disappear.

Thank you to anyone who found a poem, a track, or a quiet moment here.

The pleasure was in the making.

Richard

Spring on the Woodland Path

by Ford Madox Hueffer

So long a winter such an arctic night!
I had forgot that ever spring was bright:
But hark! The blackbird's voice like a clear flame!

So long a winter, such an age of chill,
Made me forget this silver birch clad hill.
But see, the newborn sunbeams put to shame
Our long dead winter: bracken fronds like flame,
Pierce the new morning's saffron-watered light.

So long, so long the winter in our hearts,
We had forgotten that old grief departs
And had forgotten that our hands could meet.

So long, so long: Remember our last May
When there was sunshine still and every day
New swallows skimmed low down along the street.
Ay, spring shall come, but shall we ever meet
With the old hearts in this forgotten way?

The Death Rooms

by John Masefield

My soul has many an old decaying room
Hung with the ragged arras of the past,
Where startled faces flicker in the gloom,
And horrid whispers set the cheek aghast.

Those dropping rooms are haunted by a death,
A something like a worm gnawing a brain,
That bids me heed what bitter lesson saith
The blind wind beating on the window-pane.

None dwells in those old rooms: none ever can:
I pass them through at night with hidden head;
Lock’d rotting rooms her eyes must never scan,
Floors that her blessed feet must never tread.

Haunted old rooms: rooms she must never know,
Where death-ticks knock and mouldering panels glow.
