Quick Definition

Apophasis is a device in which a speaker claims not to mention something while bringing it to attention. It can create irony, insinuation, or strategic emphasis.

Detailed Definition
Apophasis occurs when a speaker says they will not discuss, name, or dwell on a matter, yet introduces that very matter to the audience. A poet might write, “I will not speak of his betrayal,” thereby making the betrayal prominent. The device allows indirect accusation, praise, criticism, or suggestion while preserving an appearance of restraint. In poetry, apophasis can reveal a speaker's evasions and competing feelings, creating irony between what is denied and what is communicated. It also invites readers to notice the power of silence and omission.
Example
Example in poetry:
“I will not mention the king’s greed” calls attention to the very subject it claims to omit; “Not to speak of her tears, her courage was remarkable” highlights the tears while pretending to pass over them; “I need not remind you how often the moon failed us” deliberately reminds the reader; “I shall say nothing of the war’s broken children” gives emphasis through apparent silence
Additional Notes
Apophasis draws attention through apparent refusal: “I will not mention his vanity.” The denial is strategically self-defeating, making the omitted subject conspicuous. In poetry and rhetoric, it can create irony, accusation, restraint, or a speaker who seems reluctant while still controlling what the audience notices.
