In poetry, this movement can create a voice that sounds reflective rather than absolute: a lover may admit loss, a political poem may recognize an enemy's strength, or an elegy may accept death while resisting despair. By giving resistance its due, concession heightens the force of what follows and lets a poem dramatize thought as a process of weighing, qualifying, and choosing.

Concession often follows the pattern “although this is true, a larger truth remains.” It can make a speaker sound fair-minded and intellectually credible rather than defensive. In lyric poetry, a concession may register genuine ambivalence instead of merely defeating an opposing view.
