A countersink creates a conical recess around a drilled hole so a flat-head screw can finish flush with or slightly below the surface. This improves appearance and prevents the screw from catching on nearby objects. Remove only enough material for the screw head, because an oversized recess weakens the surface. A counterbore is related but makes a flat-bottomed cylindrical recess.
