The Eschaton (from Greek eschatos, meaning "last") is the culmination of linear time in apocalyptic faiths. In poetry, the Eschaton provides a dramatic backdrop for exploring ultimate questions of justice, meaning, and redemption. It forces a perspective of finality, where every action has eternal consequences. Poets use eschatological imagery—the final trumpet, the collapsing stars, the new Jerusalem—to evoke awe, terror, and hope, and to critique the present age in light of its impending, definitive end.
