Explication is a formal method of teaching poetry through sustained explanation. A student or critic examines a poem’s literal situation, speaker, tone, imagery, figurative language, sound, structure, and allusions, then connects these features to an overall interpretation. Unlike a simple paraphrase, an explication asks how the poem produces its effects. It is especially useful for dense, historical, or highly patterned works because it gives readers a disciplined way to move from individual details to larger themes without overlooking the poem’s formal design.
