Quick Definition

A deeply absorbed state in which action feels focused, fluid, and rewarding.

Detailed Definition
Flow occurs when attention is fully engaged in an activity whose demands closely meet the person's abilities, often making time and self-consciousness recede. In poetry, a musician, swimmer, gardener, or speaker may enter this state through rhythm and repeated motion. The resulting language can feel inevitable and lucid, as though the poem is carrying its maker. Flow is pleasurable not because effort disappears, but because effort becomes coherent.
Example
Example in poetry:
In “Lines Composed a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey,” Wordsworth describes reflective absorption in nature, an experience resembling flow; A poet may represent flow through long lines, rhythmic continuity, and images that move without interruption; A dancer’s poem can show flow when bodily action feels effortless and attention remains fully present; A stream of images without abrupt judgment can imitate the concentrated movement of flow
Additional Notes
Flow is a highly focused state in which a person becomes absorbed in a challenging activity, experiences altered time, and receives a sense of immediate control or reward. Flow is most likely when skill and difficulty are well matched. It is related to concentration but often includes effortless, self-forgetful involvement. Rhythmic syntax, momentum, repetition, and seamless transitions can evoke flow in verse.
