Inscaping, a term coined by Gerard Manley Hopkins, describes the poetic process of capturing the unique inner essence or “thisness” (haecceitas) of a person, object, or scene through distinctive diction, rhythm, and imagery; inscape is revealed via “instress”—the energy that holds the inscape together—and in verse, it manifests as densely textured, idiosyncratic language that renders the particular with spiritual intensity, as in “Pied Beauty.”

The active process of perceiving or creating inscape. Where inscape is the quality observed, inscaping is the creative act of recognition. Hopkins used this to describe both poetic composition and deep observation.
