Quick Definition

A painted or digitally created background used to extend a filmed environment.

Detailed Definition
Matte painting creates places that may be impossible, dangerous, expensive, or vanished: immense cities, historical settings, alien landscapes, and architectural illusions. It joins imagination to visual plausibility, often without calling attention to itself. In poetry, matte painting can describe the construction of a convincing backdrop for an invented voice or scene. A poem may use precise details to make an imagined world feel inhabited while quietly exposing its artifice.
Example
Example in poetry:
A poem can borrow matte painting by describing a distant city or mountain range as a convincing but imagined backdrop; Write a scene in which the speaker walks through a landscape that seems real until its painted edges begin to show; In a fantasy poem, a matte painting sky can enlarge the setting beyond what the characters can physically reach; Use the term figuratively when a beautiful background conceals an artificial or incomplete reality
Additional Notes
Matte painting creates settings that would be costly, dangerous, or impossible to build. It may be painted traditionally or made digitally for film.
