Quick Definition

A historical artistic tendency that idealized or borrowed from cultures labeled as primitive. The term is now often used critically because of its colonial assumptions.

Detailed Definition
Primitivism describes a modern Western tendency to seek supposedly pure, instinctive, or original art in cultures it positioned as less civilized. Artists often borrowed forms from African, Indigenous, Oceanic, and ancient traditions while ignoring their specific meanings and histories. In poetry, the term requires critical care because it exposes how artistic innovation has been entangled with colonial extraction. Poems may address primitivism to challenge exoticism, recover context, and question who is granted artistic authority.
Example
Example in poetry:
A poem can examine primitivism critically by showing how early twentieth-century European artists borrowed from African, Oceanic, and Indigenous arts while ignoring their cultural meanings; A speaker visiting a museum might question labels that call an artwork “primitive” and replace that flattening language with specific cultural and historical knowledge; Aimé Césaire’s poetry resists colonial ideas that cast Black cultures as primitive, reclaiming Black identity and historical power; A poet can contrast a modernist painter’s fascination with a mask’s appearance with the mask’s ceremonial role in its community; Rather than romanticizing an imagined “primitive” past, a poem can expose how that fantasy serves colonial desire and silences living peoples
Additional Notes
Primitivism should be approached critically because it often treats diverse Indigenous and non-Western cultures as simplistic, timeless, or available for artistic use. When discussing it, identify colonial power dynamics and cultural appropriation; related concepts include orientalism, exoticism, and representation.
