Reversi is a two-player game played by placing disks so that lines of an opponent’s pieces are enclosed and reversed. The board gradually changes allegiance, making position more important than the apparent score at any one moment. In poetry, reversi can figure conversion, revision, political reversal, or the sudden rewriting of a remembered scene. Its central image is especially apt for poems where identity is not erased but turned over and made to signify differently.
