Transference occurs when an old attachment, fear, expectation, or conflict is unconsciously experienced through a new person. In poetry, a stranger may inherit a parent's voice, a lover may be mistaken for a rescuer, or a teacher may become the imagined judge of childhood. The term creates layered emotional time: the present encounter is real, yet it is haunted by another relationship whose unfinished meanings alter what the speaker sees and feels.

In a poem about a therapist, a speaker might respond to the therapist as though they were a critical parent, illustrating transference; A grieving speaker may address a beloved through another person, transferring old feelings onto a new relationship; A dramatic monologue can reveal transference when the speaker treats a stranger as an enemy because the stranger resembles someone from the past; The poem can clarify transference by contrasting the new person’s actual behavior with the speaker’s inherited expectations.
