The tóraíocht (pursuit) is one of the narrative genres of early Irish literature, most famously represented by Tóraíocht Dhiarmada agus Ghráinne, the pursuit of Diarmait and Gráinne by the ageing hero Fionn Mac Cumhaill after Gráinne elopes with his young warrior. The narrative encodes the landscape of Ireland as a series of named places through which the flight passes, linking the story to the dinnsheanchas tradition. The tóraíocht's themes — love, jealousy, betrayal, the conflict between loyalty and desire — gave later poets and dramatists rich material. Yeats and others found in it a native equivalent to the great European romantic pursuit narratives.
