Closes

A note from Richard

V2Melody will close at midnight on 20 January 2028

This site has been a retirement project in musical poetry: poems chosen with care and set to music, offered freely for as long as it felt right to keep the garden open.

The work no longer holds the place it once did in my life. I have gone as far with it as I wish to go. Like a sand mandala, it was made to be completed and then released. I am not attached to its permanence, and I do not believe any of it needs to last beyond the time it was given. The poems were already here before I arrived and began to experiment with them. They will still be here when these musical experiments, and indeed myself, have been swept away, like the sand of a mandala. Nothing has been lost.

I want a simpler end to my life, days of simple love and enjoyment with my wonderful wife of 20 years. The work of maintaining a server, the monitoring, and the residual obligations that come with keeping a site alive no longer fit that life.

From 4 November 2026 I will not be adding new poems or musical poems to the site.

Until midnight on 20 January 2028, Spanish time, everything remains available exactly as it is. That is when my VPS server contract comes to an end, and it will not be renewed. After that, the server will be switched off and the site will disappear.

The Mandala Is Finished explains this more fully.

Thank you to anyone who found a poem, a track, or a quiet moment here.

The pleasure was in the making.

Richard

Quick Definition

Vintage refers to the specific year in which grapes are harvested, and in wine, often denotes a high-quality year for aging wine.

Detailed Definition
Vintage’s poetic weight is its mark of time—it fixes a moment, a season’s exact weather, and the human decisions that shaped the wine. Poets use vintage to anchor a memory, to compare human years to wine years, and to discuss the unrepeatable nature of events. A great vintage is a perfect alignment of sun, rain, and soil, mirroring the rare confluence of inspiration, effort, and luck in artistic creation. In elegies, vintage becomes a bittersweet marker of a specific, irretrievable past.
Example
Example in poetry:
Vintage|"Vintage is the year of the harvest, a word that fixes a moment in time, a poem of that specific season's sun and rain."; "The poet finds in vintage a way to mark time, to remember a particular year by the wine it produced."; "A great vintage is a confluence of perfect conditions, a subject for poems about luck, fate, and the alignment of the stars."; "The poet uses vintage to discuss the uniqueness of each moment, the unrepeatable nature of a single year."; "Vintage is a wine's birth certificate, a poem of the vineyard's year, of the labor and the weather that shaped it."; "The poet compares vintage to a diary entry, a record of a specific time and place, capturing a season in a bottle."
Additional Notes
Vintage is a foundational term in wine, referring to the specific year in which grapes were harvested. It is a critical indicator of quality, as weather conditions in a given year can dramatically affect the character and aging potential of a wine. For poets, vintage offers a powerful way to mark time, to anchor a poem in a particular year, and to explore the unique, unrepeatable nature of each season. The vintage of a wine can evoke the memory of a specific summer, the heat of a particular sun, and the singular confluence of conditions that made that year's wine distinct. A great vintage is a happy accident of nature, a subject for poems about luck, fate, and the preciousness of the fleeting moment. Related terms include harvest, crop, and yield.
