Anglo-Saxon Settlement of Britain
What happened
After Roman authority collapsed, migrants commonly identified as Angles, Saxons and Jutes established communities across eastern and southern Britain. Warfare, alliance and intermarriage with Britons produced new kingdoms and displaced some populations westward. Their languages developed into Old English.
Literary impact
The settlement created the linguistic world of Old English poetry. Beowulf, The Wanderer and The Seafarer reflect cultures preoccupied with migration, exile, vulnerable settlements and survival amid political violence.
