Chichimeca War
What happened
The Chichimeca War began when Spanish miners and settlers pushed into Indigenous territories north of central Mexico following silver discoveries. Mobile Indigenous groups attacked roads, settlements and supply convoys for four decades. Spain ultimately relied on negotiation, provisions and mission settlements as well as force.
Literary impact
Colonial chronicles portrayed the northern peoples through the distorting language of civilisation and savagery. Indigenous survival and the mixed cultures created along this frontier later became recurring subjects in Mexican historical writing and poetry.
