The Swedish warship Vasa capsized and sank shortly after leaving Stockholm harbour on 10 August 1628. Its high superstructure and inadequate stability made it vulnerable when struck by wind. Salvaged in 1961, the remarkably preserved vessel became a major source for understanding seventeenth-century naval technology and Swedish imperial ambition.

Swedish writers and poets have treated Vasa as a national memento mori: a magnificent object undone by pride, hierarchy and technical failure. Its recovery also inspired literary meditations on how buried objects preserve voices that official histories overlook.
