Anne Bradstreet Crosses the Atlantic Aboard Arbella

Poet involved

What happened

Arbella carried John Winthrop, Anne Bradstreet and other Puritan settlers from England to Massachusetts Bay in 1630. During the Atlantic crossing, Winthrop delivered or developed the ideas associated with his sermon A Model of Christian Charity. The voyage helped establish a major English colony around Boston.

Literary impact

Anne Bradstreet's passage aboard Arbella began her life in New England, where she became the first published poet of England's North American colonies. Her poetry records the religious tension, domestic experience and physical insecurity of the colonial world the ship carried her into.
