What happened
Charles I succeeded James I as king of England, Scotland and Ireland in London in March 1625. His belief in divinely ordained monarchy soon brought him into conflict with Parliament over taxation, religion and foreign policy. These disputes created the constitutional divisions from which civil war eventually emerged.
Literary impact
Charles's troubled reign supplied poets and pamphleteers with urgent questions about obedience, conscience and sacred kingship. Writers including John Milton, Thomas Carew and Robert Herrick responded from sharply opposing political positions.
