In 1779, the evangelical curate John Newton, a former slave ship captain, collaborated with the brilliant but plagued poet William Cowper to publish the 'Olney Hymns' in the small parish of Olney, England. This landmark collection contained Newton's immortal hymn 'Amazing Grace', alongside deep spiritual meditations composed by Cowper. The collection was designed to express the profound spiritual experiences, struggles, and redemptive journeys of ordinary working-class parishioners, capturing both ecstatic assurance and the darkest depths of psychological despair.
