In October 1962, Pope John XXIII opened the Second Vatican Council, commonly known as Vatican II, inside St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. This council aimed to bring the Catholic Church into closer dialogue with the modern world, introducing sweeping reforms that included replacing Latin with local vernacular languages for the celebration of the Mass. It re-emphasized ecumenical dialogue with other Christian denominations, promoted religious freedom, and encouraged a more active, collaborative role for lay Catholics within the life and liturgy of the Church.

The transition from Latin to vernacular liturgies triggered a massive boom in localized, vernacular hymnody and contemporary religious poetry across the globe. However, it also sparked a poignant wave of nostalgic, elegies written by traditionalist poets mourning the loss of the ancient, universal Latin literary heritage.
