Atlantic Slave Trade Creates the African Diaspora
Poet involved
What happened
European and American traders forcibly transported millions of Africans across the Atlantic to plantations and settlements in the Americas. Major embarkation regions included West and West-Central Africa, while principal destinations included Brazil, the Caribbean and British North America. The trade created vast diasporic communities through racialised violence and enslavement.
Literary impact
Enslaved people preserved and transformed African rhythms, oral narratives, praise traditions and spiritual songs throughout the Americas. Phillis Wheatley, Olaudah Equiano and later Black poets drew upon the experience, while spirituals, blues and Caribbean verse became major foundations of modern literature and music.
