Halley's Comet and the Huns
What happened
Halley's Comet blazed across Europe just before the massive Battle of the Catalaunian Plains in the Champagne region of France. The Western Roman Empire, allied with the Visigoths under King Theodoric I, clashed with Attila the Hun in one of the bloodiest conflicts in antiquity. Both Roman and Hunnic factions interpreted the bright comet as an ominous harbinger of great bloodshed and the violent deaths of high-ranking leaders, which was fulfilled when King Theodoric died during the battle.
Literary impact
The atmospheric terror of this comet passed into early medieval chronicles and Germanic heroic epics. This cosmic omen permanently linked the figure of Attila the Hun with celestial wrath and apocalyptic destruction in the European poetic imagination.
