Duke of Lennox ratifies Montgomerie's pension

Poet involved

What happened

On 2 November 1591 Ludovic Stewart, second Duke of Lennox, formally ratified Alexander Montgomerie's pension for 'guid and thankfull service done and to be done'. The ratification occurred while the duke claimed rights to the bishopric of Glasgow, on whose revenues the pension was charged. The document underscores the continuing patronage Montgomerie enjoyed from his Stewart kinsmen at the Scottish court.

Literary impact

The duke's support reinforced Montgomerie's ties to the Lennox circle and is reflected in affectionate sonnets addressed to Ludovic and his duchess. These poems illustrate the poet's cultivation of noble patrons and the personal networks that sustained his literary career amid shifting court politics.
