Benjamin Franklin helped found the Philadelphia Contributionship for the Insurance of Houses from Loss by Fire in 1752, the first successful property insurance company in North America, modelled on English fire office principles.

Franklin's involvement links insurance directly to the Enlightenment project of rational improvement; as a printer, publisher, and writer, Franklin embodied the Augustan ideal of practical wisdom, and the Contributionship became a civic symbol celebrated in early American letters.
