Jan Hus Is Burned at the Stake
What happened
In 1415, Czech reformer Jan Hus was condemned for heresy at the Council of Constance and burned despite having received a promise of safe conduct. His death intensified religious conflict in Bohemia. It became a powerful example of authority punishing conscience and dissent.
Literary impact
Hus's martyrdom inspired hymns, polemical writing, and later Protestant memory. The event helped create a literary tradition in which the persecuted speaker stands against corrupt institutional power, a pattern often echoed in religious and political poetry.
