What happened
The celebrated Scottish poet Robert Burns fell passionately in love with Margaret 'Highland Mary' Campbell, a young dairymaid, during a period of deep personal and financial turmoil. The lovers exchanged bibles over a running stream in an ancient Scottish ritual of betrothal and planned to emigrate together to Jamaica to start a new life. Tragically, before they could depart, Mary caught typhus while nursing her brother and died suddenly in Greenock, plunging Burns into profound grief.
Literary impact
Mary's untimely death inspired Burns to write some of his most heartbreaking, enduringly popular elegiac lyric poems, including 'Highland Mary' and 'To Mary in Heaven'.
