Song Dynasty Established

What happened

The Song Dynasty was founded in 960 CE by Zhao Kuangyin (Emperor Taizu), reunifying most of China after the fragmented Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. The Song era witnessed extraordinary economic growth, technological innovation including movable type printing, gunpowder weapons, and the compass, plus urbanization that created large merchant and artisan classes. Neo-Confucianism emerged as the dominant philosophical framework, emphasizing moral self-cultivation and social responsibility.

Literary impact

The Song Dynasty perfected ci poetry, a lyrical form set to musical tunes that allowed greater emotional expression than classical shi poetry. Poets like Su Shi and Li Qingzhao elevated ci to high literary status, exploring personal emotion, nature, and philosophical reflection with unprecedented intimacy. The expansion of printing technology made poetry collections widely available, creating a reading public beyond the elite and fostering literary clubs and competitions that enriched poetic culture.
