Sappho's Lyric Circle Flourishes on Lesbos
Poet involved
What happened
Around the late seventh and early sixth centuries BCE, Sappho of Lesbos became one of the defining voices of Greek lyric poetry. Her poems addressed desire, ritual, marriage, female friendship, and emotional interiority in a voice unusually intimate for surviving ancient literature. Although only fragments remain, her reputation endured across the classical world.
Literary impact
Sappho gave later poets a model of concentrated personal feeling, especially in poems of longing, absence, and erotic attachment. Her fragmentary survival has also made her a powerful symbol for women writers and queer literary traditions whose work was preserved incompletely or through hostile cultural filters.
