Sangam Poetry Begins to Preserve Tamil Voices
What happened
The Sangam literary age, usually dated from about 300 BCE to 300 CE, produced a vast body of early Tamil poetry. Its poems range from love lyrics and war songs to laments, praise poems, and sharp observations of landscape and social rank. The tradition is striking for preserving voices from beyond imperial Sanskrit court culture.
Literary impact
Sangam poetry gave Tamil a classical literary prestige independent of northern Indian models. Its attention to women speakers, lovers, wandering bards, warriors, and marginal landscapes helped shape later South Asian poetics and offers modern readers a non-Western lyric tradition of great emotional subtlety.
