In May 1373, Julian of Norwich experienced a series of visions during a severe illness. She later shaped them into Revelations of Divine Love, a work now often described as the earliest surviving English-language book by a woman. Its language of divine compassion emerged from enclosure, sickness, and spiritual crisis.

Julian's writing expanded English devotional prose and poetic theology through a distinctly female contemplative voice. Her images of motherhood, suffering, and universal mercy have influenced modern poets and spiritual writers searching for a gentler counter-tradition within medieval Christianity.
