In 1505 the satirist Thomas Murner was crowned poet laureate by the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I. The honour linked German humanist verse to imperial patronage and public controversy. Murner later became famous for sharp attacks in the religious conflicts of the Reformation age.

Murner's career shows how satire could move from carnival laughter to confessional polemic. For poetry readers, he represents a vernacular and Latin tradition in which poets became noisy participants in political and religious argument.
