Albrecht Dürer completed the Feast of the Rose Garlands in Venice in 1506 for the German merchant community. The work joined northern precision to Italian colour and monumental composition. It shows how trade diasporas could sponsor hybrid art across linguistic and civic boundaries.

Dürer's Venetian work encouraged poets and artists to think across national styles. It also illustrates how merchant communities, not only courts and churches, helped circulate images, stories and devotional feeling through Europe.
